You could say it’s the work of a man from another age and is best ignored. But Garrick Tremain, who used to put editorial cartoons into newspapers, persists in putting pieces of ordure onto the Internet where others eagerly endorse and praise and share them, and add their own. This is the sort of thing I’m talking about.

In plenty of pockets of Facebook they’re loving this shit. The eagerness with which this vileness is shared and the vehemence with which it is endorsed feels of a piece with some of the readiness to denounce lawlessness and gangs roaming the streets and weapons presented at road checkpoints.

The police commissioner was on the radio this morning to say, what you’re hearing through word of mouth is not what we’re seeing, and not what is being reported to us, almost as though things might be getting exaggerated, almost as though assumptions might be being made, almost as though wild talk might be serving to mislead.
