I blame Rupert Murdoch for the state of things.
Sure, you can also blame algorithms and Zuckerberg and Tucker Carlson and Putin and bots. But before any of that, there was Murdoch stoking fear and loathing for money. He stoked it in his newspapers, he stoked it in his cable TV, and that provided the cauldron for a seething soup of Tea Party and hijacked Republicans and toxic social media and just look at what al we’re steaming in now. And yes, of course, none of this is new. Humanity keeps doing it and learning the same agonising lesson over and over but man, did we ever imagine it would come this soon after Goebbels?
