Off we go to Bunnings with the Prime Minister

Imagine you've bought yourself a lovely old villa. You like it very much. But you can't help thinking how much nicer it would be to have a beautiful open plan kitchen like the neighbours.

Imagine you've bought yourself a lovely old villa. You don't have any money left over to pay an architect or a builder but it would be so nice to have a beautiful open plan kitchen like the neighbours.

So you look at the wall and you think to yourself: That's all that's standing between us and an open plan. And you say out loud to each other: How hard could it be?

Before you know it, you're coming out of Bunninsg with everything you need and you buy a third barbecue sausage to celebrate.

Weekends and weekends go by. Finally you're done. The open plan kitchen looks fabulous. You invite over the neighbors. Paul knows a bit about building, but he's too polite to ask what happened to the load bearing wall that used to be there.

A bit more time goes by. And then oh no, oh dear, of god oh god. Now you know what can happen when you take out a load bearing wall. How simple it had all seemed when you looked at each other and asked how hard could it be?

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to today's Grand Designs-friendly metaphor to explain what the fuck is so very wrong with so much of the shit Luxon and his Two-Ticks-National buddies are peddling.
