It’s 1985 and I have been living in Auckland for a few weeks and the radio I’m listening to is not Morning Report, but Kevin Black on Hauraki. For the laughs, mostly.
Would you call it funny today? I know I thought so in 1985. He would do the prank calls and it might be someone in officialdom who you just knew was wearing a tie and a short-sleeved shirt, or it might be someone's Mum or Dad or brother, and the request would be could you give them a bit of a hard time? which was the listener’s way of saying can you do that hard-case stuff you do, Blacky? They would get a wind-up that was witty, clever and quick but still left the person at the other end of the phone holding their dignity.
