What I saw at my detox

What I saw at my detox

In the winter of 1988, we had 11% unemployment; the wild west stock market had imploded; people were seeing their life savings evaporate as one finance company after another fell over; the BNZ appeared to be doing the receiverships alphabetically because they couldn't get to everybody at once, and nothing was looking very great at all.

It was a discouraging time.

I had set up a liquor licensing business to make the most of liquor industry deregulation but the revolution appeared to be marooned inside the machinery of government, and I had a lot of spare capacity on my hands as we like to euphemise in the private sector.
