Economic woes for Wellington continued today with news that yet more longstanding enterprises were going out of business. Capital One Hour Photos; Courtenay Place Video Rentals; CDs on Cuba and Kumar’s Smokefree No-Cigarettes Dairy all said they would be closed by the end of the month, and they all had the same complaint: bike lanes.

The cycle lanes just knocked us for six, said Ken Didd-Kemmera.
Back in the day we would have people lined halfway down the Terrace at lunchtime to collect their snaps.
But where are they now that the city’s stuffed full of cycle lanes? Eh? Eh?

Dairy owner Vijay Kumar tells a similar story.
Look we’re fifteen streets away from the nearest cycleway, but even fifteen streets away has been enough to knock the stuffing out of our takings.
All I'm selling now are ten-litre bottles of coke.
And you can't live on that.
