Hey, remember America? Shining city on a hill, beacon for the oppressed etc, never really resolved its civil war and race problems, powerhouse of innovation and science and technology, followed the Soviet Union into space, home of Hollywood and such television as the Brady Bunch and The Wire?
It has been forever shining and forever flawed, but lately it's been getting hard to see America’s good for the treason. So much hate and christo-fascism and Bannon and Kavanaugh and MAGA, while people say soothingly oh it won't get that bad and they wouldn't go that far, even though they were previously saying Roe v Wade is safe and establishment Republicans will contain Trump.
I recite all this to place in context a recent story that might once have seemed shocking.
