Listening to the wrong people

Listening to the wrong people

I used to do talk radio as wrong as you can do it. I didn’t toss out red meat to draw fangs, I didn't play devil's advocate, I didn’t talk shit to get the phones ringing. Somehow I still managed to get plenty of calls. This is my wafer-thin basis for asserting that playing to peoples’ worst instincts is the laziest kind of media entertainment.

Hear me out, please, I’m thinking about crime and punishment and how we run our prisons, and I'm thinking about Jimmy McGovern.

The best kind of storyteller can take people with them, win their trust, take them for a walk down a familiar street and get them to see all kinds of things they’d never noticed before.
