Less of the hate

Less of the hate

The closing years of the twentieth century — the one that began with the slaughter of tens of millions of people across two world wars — was a time for such productions as Shoah and Sophie’s Choice and Schindler's List. People might sit afterwards in shocked silence, or maybe assert that these people were unrecognisable monsters.

I feel nostalgic for those times, the blithe confidence that it could never happen again, that our way ahead would be forever lit by our higher morality.

The unfolding of this new millennium has a different mood.
