The world is full of impatient people, drumming their fingers in irritation tap tap tap on the table, tap tap tap on their steering wheel tap sighing loudly at the inconvenience of all the stupid people holding them up, even if only for a moment.
Just let me do what I want to do.
Let Me Get On With It.
Another way for someone to drum fingers and sigh with theatrical impatience is to say I think we should have another look at MMP.
Possibly the Prime Minister was just blurting this to ingratiate himself to a radio caller because he's so needy with voters, but more likely he has been stewing since election night.
Plainly he believes there should be a National government in office that gets to do exactly what a National government wants without having to bow and scrape to any bastard, let alone a yahoo or a numpty.
Back when it was First Past The Post you didn't have to take any of that shit.
You didn’t even have to get as many votes as Labour and you could still be the government. And if you were Robert Muldoon you could be the whole government in one person. You’d decided to do something while you were shaving and by lunchtime it would be a regulation.
You could Just Get On With It. God those were the days, eh.
When people say Just Get On With It like that in capitals it’s a sort of Kiwi liturgy that goes along with Get the Government Out of Our Hair and Reduce the Tax Burden and My Private Property is Sacred. All of them are a liturgy of the creed I Know Best So Shut Up.
