If ever someone you love has struggled with a mental health problem, you may have had to deal with know-nothings confidently asserting that it’s all in her head, or: she just has to snap out of it. Never mind that you can no more snap out of mental illness than snap out of cancer.
Or you may hear people say, oh how very convenient. Meaning: they're just using it as cover.
You want to tell them:
Just because you’ve never had this experience does not mean the nightmare cannot be real.
