Poor old democracy, it really is in a sorry state. It would be easy to put all the blame on the vandals and tyrants presently trashing the White House, but this has been years in the making. It begins with Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan and the spirit of Gordon Gekko, and it rolls on all the way to Facebook and the anti-vaxxers, with nothing more than the occasional Bernie Sanders to impede its march towards the cliff.

I'm largely in agreement with reader Debra — hi Debs! Who’d have guessed we’d be talking like this 40 years on from law school? — watching on aghast as the USA takes one blow after another. By comparison, what’s going on here seems the least of things.
But on the other hand the question keeps offering itself as we watch our own dire government at work: just how far might these people like to take things?
