We never get to feel one thing at a time, us grownups

Tomorrow we have a funeral, and thank you all of you for your very kind words and thoughts — flowers, even.

Our friend Michèle messaged: we never get to feel one thing at a time, us grownups, and oh boy is that ever the truth. Tomorrow we have the funeral, and the following day there will be another one. I’m only now finding the first words to talk about it. In the middle of everything else that was happening on Saturday we learned that friends had lost their young son in the most anguishing way, as some of you who are also their friends will doubtless know.

When a life ends so early, where do you possibly find solace? I hope it will come for them. I don’t know yet what other words I will have for their unimaginable loss, so I’m turning back to the pictures we’ve been collecting that illustrate Betty’s life.
