Everything repeats, over and over

1. Is this the one that brings everything crashing down?

This is a question I have asked myself many times now: The '87 crash; the Asian Financial Crisis; the Dotcom bubble; the Global Financial Crisis; the COVID.

Each time the answer has turned out be: no, there will be No Great Depression in New Zealand. Although the longer things go along, the more it feels that in the case of the GFC we escaped by only the skin of our teeth, and we’re still living with its consequences, which is to say: the rich got rescued and the rest of us are still wearing the cost, up to and including an onslaught of populism.

And now here comes another one that might bring everything crashing down. Or not.
