Statistics Minister Dr Shane Reti says there's “no need for anyone to get worked up” about plans to dump the census and replace it with a finger in the wind and Mike Hosking's reckons.
Speaking from a beanbag in a Raglan surf shop, Dr Reti told reporters the new methodology would "fully do the job" and was "quite beautiful, really."
“Kyle here has been reading surf conditions for thirty years, and he says you can work out the whole beach just by holding up your thumb and counting the sets between your fingers. It’s no different for population data," Dr Reti explained, his pupils notably dilated.
