By the time I turned 10, I had met in my life perhaps 90 other kids. There are only so many to fill your world when you live in the country: nine cousins, a couple of dozen kids at play centre, a few dozen more at primary school - a few more at Cubs, a few more on holidays.
Our parents didn't intend for us to be deprived. Mum, a teacher, took us to the library each week for armloads of books. She and a friend started a playcentre. Here's Dad and the other dads converting an old house for it.

Mum and Dad had decided that at Form One we wouldn’t be staying at the little primary school, we would be going into town to the intermediate school, roll 400.
